One of the most important treatments that you can give your smile is often one of the most neglected. Flossing your teeth is essential for optimal health care, as it can remove plaque buildup and bacteria that brushing alone cannot remove. However, we often neglect our flossing duties or are not practicing them effectively enough.

Dental floss is extremely effective for cleaning between teeth in spaces that toothbrushes cannot reach. However, it is important that the floss is shred-resistant and will not tear after use. Furthermore, never use the same strand more than once, and never use the same section of a strand more than once.

To floss effectively, use a new strand each session that is roughly 18“ in length. Wrap each end around a finger on each hand for a firm hold that allows you to move up and down the floss as needed. Gently clean between each tooth by forming a ‘c’ shape around each tooth to ensure that all areas can be flossed. Move up and down the strand between each tooth to ensure contamination will not occur. If traditional dental floss is problematic or too difficult to use, switch to an interdental cleaner such as a water flosser.
